A very popular book on life at IIT by Chetan Bhagat. The story is about the college days of three students from IIT Delhi. There are a few words you do not associate with an IITian like losers, under performers, failures etc. This story is about just this kind of IITians who are at the bottom of their class and in the bad books of all professors.

It describes the ups and downs of their college life. Their low scores, the way they are perceived by fellow students and professors on the account of their scores, their drinking habit, their strategy to beat the system and finally being caught stealing from their HOD’s cabin. The book does not try to justify or give their excuses for all their wrong doing of the protagonists. They are far less than perfect people, yet you come to like them. It is a very different kind of “coming of age” book, definitely worth reading.

This was the first novel written by Chetan Bhagat, an alumni of IIT himself. The book was an instant hit with both younger and older generations, who identified with protagonists and the incidents in their own college life.

Well, the rumours are that, Bollywood is keen on on cashing in on the book’s popularity. A movie called ‘Idiots’ is being made with Aamir Khan playing the lead role, to be directed by the talented Rajkumar Hirani (Director of Munnabhai series) and to be produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra (Producer of Munnabhai series).

Interesting combination! Will have to wait and watch how this wonderful novel transforms into its celluloid screen adaption. Hope it’s as capativating and hilarious as the novel.
