Gary Baise is a former US Associate Deputy Attorney General and Acting Deputy Attorney General He was EPA's first Chief of Staff; served as Executive Assistant to the Director of FBI, and a corporate executive. He describes himself as a "leader who is willing to tackle the tough issues facing Fairfax County. He discusses his vision for the County and how (if elected) he would handle the issues of congestion, shortage of housing, denial of services to illegal immigrants, etc.

SALTAF Interview:

The Network of South Asian Professionals (NetSAP) sponsors a South Asian Literary Arts Festival (SALTAF) every year featuring some well-known and well-respected South Asian authors.

This event will take place on Saturday, November 3rd at the Meyer Auditorium of the Smithsonian Institution. It is free and open to public. This year's authors include: Madur Jaffrey (author of "Climbing the Mango Trees"); Amitava Kumar ("Husband of a Fanatic"); Rishi Reddi ("Karma and other Short Stories"); and Thrity Umrigar ("If Today Be Sweet"). Another invited guest is Vic Sarin, a filmmaker whose movie, "Partition" will be shown at the SALTAF.

- The Indian government's decision to break apart Adam's Bridge (also called, Ram Sethu) between the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal has come under fire from religious Hindus who believe that the bridge was personally built by the Hindu God, Lord Rama.

- Sant Chatwal, and Indian-American businessman (who has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Presidential candidate, Senator Clinton) has come under focus recently for his past problems with IRS. India West reports that the focus on Chatwal came against the backdrop of Senator Clinton's major 2008 fundraiser Norman Hsu who has been arrested on allegations of grand theft.

- New York Times reports that Hewlett-Packard has designed a new PC (TouchSmart IQ770 PC) for kitchen of the future. People can turn on the computer along with the coffeepot, and then check the screen for the weather, ball game scores and the family calendar as they eat breakfast. - BBC reports that book lovers and movie-goers are eagerly awaiting the release of the film version of the popular, best-seller novel, The Kite Runner. However, it is running into a controversy in Afghanistan, the country where most of it is set.

Interview with Pandit Patil:

Ramesh Butani speaks with Virginia winemaker, Dr. Pandil Patil, who (along with his wife, Dr. Sudha Patil) has embarked on a new career of winemaking. Dr. Patil tells viewers about his Narmada Vineyard in Amissville, VA where he has a 51 acre farm. He is using 18-20 acres to grow grapes for wine and a few acres to grow cherry trees (for cherry wine). He also has a pond in which he plans to cultivate fish. Dr. Patil shares his knowledge about winemaking - what type of soil, fertilizers, temperature, is needed to grow grapes.
